Eboya Houju Wakaba Green Medium Fountain Pen

Eboya is the last factory dedicated to ebonite production in Japan. Each piece reflects a deep commitment to traditional craftsmanship and continuous innovation. The use of ebonite—one of the earliest polymers ever developed—gives this fountain pen a distinctive character. Ebonite is produced by vulcanizing pure rubber with sulfur (between 25% and 50%), and its name derives from ebony, which it gradually replaced thanks to its durability, warmth to the touch, and natural sheen. Engraved on the barrel, as on all Eboya creations, the inscription Eboya Made in Tokyo stands as a mark of origin and excellence.

Concept and Design

The Houju model takes its name from the “宝珠” (Hōju), the mythical wish-fulfilling jewel associated with dragons in Japanese Buddhist and Shinto traditions. Symbolizing prosperity, protection, and the realization of one’s aspirations, the Hōju is often depicted as a sacred sphere or teardrop-shaped gem found in shrine architecture or held by the fox, the messenger of Inari. The pen’s softly rounded silhouette echoes this symbolism, offering a harmonious and timeless form. A Japanese-style gold-plated clip completes the design, reinforcing the idea of a writing instrument meant to be cherished and preserved over time.

Functionality and Filling System

Equipped with a carefully adjusted 14K gold nib, the Eboya Houju Wakaba Green Medium delivers a smooth, controlled, and comfortable writing experience. It is well suited for extended writing sessions as well as everyday use. The pen features an international cartridge/converter filling system, compatible with brands such as Pelikan, Rotring, Faber-Castell, Kaweco, and Diplomat (not compatible with Montblanc, Waterman, or Caran d’Ache). Each pen body is individually hand-turned and polished in Tokyo, following the long-standing artisan tradition of Nikko Ebonite Manufacturing. The precise assembly of all components, combined with the color of its ebonite, results in a writing instrument of remarkable balance, beauty, and quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the Eboya Houju Wakaba Green Medium suitable for?
This model is ideal for writers and fountain pen enthusiasts who value Japanese craftsmanship and the tactile warmth of ebonite. It is suitable for daily use and equally appealing to collectors seeking a refined, natural color.

Is the Wakaba Green color identical on every pen?
Not exactly. Because each pen is made from hand-polished ebonite, subtle variations in tone and depth may occur, making every piece unique.

How should an ebonite fountain pen be cared for?
Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, heat, and humidity. Regular wiping with a soft, dry cloth is enough to keep the pen in good condition.

Can I use inks from any brand?
Yes. The pen is compatible with standard fountain pen inks used with international cartridges or converters. Highly saturated or pigmented inks should be used with regular cleaning.

Does the pen include a converter?
Yes. Inktraveler supplies this model with an international standard converter, as well as one ink cartridge.

Is the paulownia wood box an original Eboya accessory?
No. Inktraveler replaces the standard cardboard packaging with a premium paulownia wood box to enhance presentation and protection.

Brand History & Philosophy

Eboya is the flagship brand of Nikko Ebonite Manufacturing, founded in 1952 and recognized as the last Japanese company specializing exclusively in ebonite. For decades, it has supplied this material to major Japanese writing instrument manufacturers. In 2009, Eboya introduced its own line of fountain pens, combining technical expertise with a distinctly Japanese sense of proportion and comfort. Until 2016, production was led by master turner Noritoshi Kanesaki, whose work helped define the brand’s character. Today, Eboya continues to create writing instruments that are durable, ergonomic, and unmistakably refined.

“A fountain pen designed to grow with its user, like the first green leaves of spring.”
