Taccia Ukiyoe Kuniyoshi Akane is a 40 ml Japanese fountain pen ink in a rich dark red shade inspired by the traditional Akane colour. Elegant and expressive, it combines the heritage of Japanese dyeing traditions with the dramatic visual energy of Utagawa Kuniyoshi's artwork.
The Taccia Ukiyoe Kuniyoshi Akane is part of the third edition of Taccia’s Ukiyo-e Ink Collection, inspired by the work of the celebrated Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861), one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e woodblock printing. Renowned for his boundless imagination, bold compositions and fascination with legendary warriors, supernatural creatures and dramatic scenes, Kuniyoshi revolutionised the art of his time and continues to inspire artists and enthusiasts around the world.
Taccia’s Ukiyo-e collection began in 2020 with a first series inspired by the works of Hokusai and Sharaku, followed in 2021 by a second collection dedicated to Hiroshige and Utamaro. This third edition pays tribute to Kuniyoshi through a selection of colours inspired by some of his most iconic images, bringing the visual richness of ukiyo-e into the world of writing.
The inks in this series share a distinctive characteristic: they are predominantly deep, dark shades capable of conveying the dramatic intensity present in many of Kuniyoshi’s compositions. The collection consists of seven colours: Azuki (muted reddish brown), Keshizumi (charcoal grey), Budou Nezu (purple grey), Kuro Midori (deep dark green), Uguisucha (dark yellow-brown), Kuromurasaki (deep black purple) and Akane (dark red).
Akane (茜) is one of Japan’s oldest traditional colours. Its name comes from the Japanese madder plant, whose roots were used for centuries to produce natural red dyes. Since ancient times, this colour has been associated with vitality, energy and the beauty of the red tones that illuminate the sky at sunrise and sunset.
Within the Kuniyoshi collection, Akane is presented as a deep and elegant dark red capable of conveying visual strength without becoming overwhelming. Its rich colour recalls the traditional pigments used in Japanese textiles, woodblock prints and decorative arts, creating a feeling of depth, warmth and refinement.
This colour perfectly complements the artistic world of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, where drama, movement and emotional intensity play a central role. Akane captures that energy through a warm and expressive tone that stands out beautifully on the page while maintaining a sophisticated character.
Akane offers smooth flow and a deep red colour with dark undertones that may reveal subtle burgundy nuances depending on the paper, lighting and ink concentration. This tonal richness gives the ink a distinctive personality within the Ukiyoe collection.
Its excellent readability makes it an ideal choice for journals, correspondence, special annotations, illustration and creative writing. It is particularly appealing to writers seeking a mature and elegant red rather than a bright or vibrant scarlet.
