Taccia Ukiyoe Kuniyoshi Kuromidori 40 ml Fountain Pen Ink

The Taccia Ukiyoe Kuniyoshi Kuromidori is part of the third edition of Taccia’s Ukiyo-e Ink Collection, inspired by the work of the celebrated Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861), one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e woodblock printing. Renowned for his boundless imagination, bold compositions and fascination with legendary warriors, supernatural creatures and dramatic scenes, Kuniyoshi revolutionised the art of his time and continues to inspire artists and enthusiasts around the world.

Taccia’s Ukiyo-e collection began in 2020 with a first series inspired by the works of Hokusai and Sharaku, followed in 2021 by a second collection dedicated to Hiroshige and Utamaro. This third edition pays tribute to Kuniyoshi through a selection of colours inspired by some of his most iconic images, bringing the visual richness of ukiyo-e into the world of writing.

The inks in this series share a distinctive characteristic: they are predominantly deep, dark shades capable of conveying the dramatic intensity present in many of Kuniyoshi’s compositions. The collection consists of seven colours: Azuki (muted reddish brown), Keshizumi (charcoal grey), Budou Nezu (purple grey), Kuro Midori (deep dark green), Uguisucha (dark yellow-brown), Kuromurasaki (deep black purple) and Akane (dark red).

Kuromidori: The Depth of Black Green

Kuromidori (黒緑) literally means “black green.” It is a traditional Japanese colour that combines the visual depth of black with dark green undertones inspired by ancient forests, evergreen pines and shadowy landscapes illuminated by faint light. The result is a sophisticated and complex shade that subtly changes depending on lighting conditions and paper choice.

The artwork selected by Taccia for this ink features an intense battle scene centred on an armed warrior. As with many of Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s works, the composition conveys movement, dramatic tension and extraordinary visual richness. The dark green elements present in the artwork harmonise perfectly with the personality of Kuromidori, reinforcing the sense of strength and depth associated with this colour.

Within the Kuniyoshi collection, Kuromidori occupies a unique place thanks to its ability to exist between green and black. At first glance it may appear almost black, yet closer observation reveals deep green undertones that gradually emerge and showcase its full chromatic complexity.

Writing Experience

Kuromidori offers an elegant and highly legible writing experience. The ink initially appears as a very dark shade close to black, but reveals rich green undertones as it dries on the page. This dual character makes it particularly appealing for writers seeking a sophisticated alternative to traditional black inks.

Its balance of discretion and personality makes it ideal for correspondence, journals, notebooks, professional writing, illustration and any project where a dark colour with distinctive character is desired.
