Midori Envelopes Iyo Washi Wisteria

The Midori Envelopes Iyo Washi Wisteria belong to MIDORI’s delicate Paper Series, a Japanese stationery collection inspired by seasonal flowers and the fleeting beauty of nature. This design captures blooming Japanese wisteria through an elegant composition enhanced with subtle gold silk-printing details. Ideal for personal correspondence, thoughtful gift messages and anyone who appreciates refined Japanese paper goods with a calm seasonal atmosphere.

Concept and design

The design depicts graceful wisteria branches gently moving in the early summer breeze. Purple and pink flowers appear alongside soft green leaves on refined white Iyo washi paper, a traditional Japanese paper recognised for its distinctive brush-textured surface. The gold silk-printing applied to petals and foliage creates delicate reflections that shift subtly depending on the light, adding elegance without overwhelming the composition.

These envelopes are designed for personal letters, thank-you notes, small gifts or decorative correspondence. Their compact format also allows them to hold gift cards or small message cards while maintaining a refined and carefully presented appearance.

Iyo Washi paper and writing experience

For this collection, MIDORI uses Iyo Washi paper produced in Ehime Prefecture, an area of Japan known for its clean water and long papermaking tradition. The characteristic “hake-me” texture visible across the surface gives the paper a tactile warmth and visual depth that differs greatly from conventional industrial paper.

Writing performance varies depending on the instrument and ink used. The paper works especially well with liquid ink pens, rollerballs and brush pens, while some fountain pen inks may show slight feathering or mild show-through depending on nib size and ink flow. This organic interaction between ink and washi is considered part of the charm of traditional Japanese correspondence paper.

Frequently asked questions

Can these envelopes be mailed directly?
Yes. Their size makes them suitable for personal correspondence, thank-you notes and small handwritten messages. Depending on local postal regulations, using an additional protective outer envelope may help prevent damage during shipping.

What kind of paper does MIDORI use for this collection?
These envelopes are made from traditional Iyo Washi paper from Ehime Prefecture in Japan. This type of washi is appreciated for its visible brush-like texture and warm tactile character.

Can they be used with fountain pens?
Yes, although MIDORI indicates that performance may vary depending on ink and nib size. The envelopes work especially well with liquid ink pens, rollerballs and brush pens. Some fountain pen inks may show mild feathering or slight show-through due to the organic nature of Japanese washi paper.

What does “silk-printing” mean?
MIDORI’s silk-printing technique applies delicate metallic gold details to flowers and leaves through a precise printing process. This creates subtle light reflections and adds visual depth while preserving the understated elegance characteristic of Japanese stationery.

What are these envelopes best suited for?
They are ideal for personal letters, thank-you messages, journaling, gift notes and seasonal correspondence. The wisteria-inspired floral design makes them especially appropriate for spring and early summer writing.

About MIDORI

MIDORI was founded in Japan in 1950 under the name Midori Shokai Co., Ltd. Its first product was letter paper decorated with a traditional courier symbol, establishing from the beginning a strong connection between the brand and written communication. The word “Midori”, meaning “green” in Japanese, was chosen to represent growth, nature and continuous evolution.

During the 1950s and 1960s, MIDORI developed diaries, memo pads and correspondence products that offered greater flexibility compared to traditional stationery of the period. Historic products such as the Diamond Memo from 1961 became widely appreciated in Japan thanks to their compact design and ability to be written on both sides of the page.

From the 1970s onward, the company expanded its creative universe with decorative stickers, illustrated journals, desk accessories and seasonal stationery inspired by Japanese nature and daily life. MIDORI established a philosophy in which small everyday objects could bring calm, beauty and emotional value into ordinary routines. Many of its designs also received Good Design Awards in Japan.

The well-known Paper Series, to which these envelopes belong, reflects this philosophy perfectly by combining traditional Japanese paper with floral compositions inspired by seasonal transitions. The goal is not simply to send a message, but to transform correspondence itself into an aesthetic and emotional experience.

In later decades, MIDORI introduced internationally recognised collections such as MD Notebook, PAPER CRAFT and TRAVELER’S notebook, originally launched in 2006 and later developed into the independent TRAVELER’S COMPANY brand. All of these products share the same purpose: improving the experience of writing, travelling, organising and preserving memories through thoughtful materials and timeless Japanese design.

“Handwritten correspondence still has the ability to make even the smallest message feel deeply personal.”
