Taccia Ukiyo-e Kuniyoshi Kuromurasaki 40 ml Fountain Pen Ink

The Taccia Ukiyo-e Kuniyoshi Kuromurasaki is part of the third Ukiyo-e ink collection dedicated to the work of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861), one of the last great masters of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Renowned for his boundless imagination, bold compositions and fascination with legendary warriors, supernatural creatures and dramatic scenes, Kuniyoshi revolutionised the art of his era and continues to inspire artists and enthusiasts around the world.

This collection brings to writing some of the colours found in his most celebrated works, transforming the visual language of ukiyo-e into a fountain pen ink experience. Each ink has been designed to evoke an atmosphere, an emotion or a distinctive element from Kuniyoshi’s remarkable prints.

Kuromurasaki: The Mystery of Black Purple

Kuromurasaki (黒紫) literally means “black purple”. It is a traditional Japanese colour of remarkable depth, combining the darkness of black with subtle purple undertones. Historically, this shade was associated with elegance, mystery and solemnity, appearing in textiles, dyes and decorative arts of particular importance.

In Taccia’s interpretation, Kuromurasaki is inspired by the famous Gashadokuro, one of the most unsettling creatures of Japanese folklore. Gashadokuro are gigantic skeletal yōkai said to be born from the resentment of those who died in battle, famine or tragedy and whose remains were left unburied. These supernatural beings wander through the night and occupy a prominent place in Japanese legends concerning ghosts and vengeful spirits.

The artwork that inspired this ink comes from one of Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s most iconic images. The print depicts Takiyasha-hime, daughter of the legendary warrior Taira no Masakado, summoning a gigantic skeletal yōkai to attack the samurai Ōya Tarō Mitsukuni. Created during the Edo period to illustrate a popular yomihon novel written by Santō Kyōden, this scene has become one of the most recognisable images of Japan’s supernatural imagination.
