Japanese fountain pen manufacturers, in order to ensure their pens perfectly adapt to the user’s needs, have modified the nibs, achieving a wide variety of different line widths beyond the classic fine, medium, and broad. This is how Pilot has taken its designs to the extreme, creating fountain pens such as the Custom Heritage 912, where up to 15 different nibs can be selected, offering specific writing styles ranging from ultra-fine enthusiasts to calligraphers, including flexible and semi-flexible nibs that are increasingly rare in modern fountain pens, all supported by advanced feed technology to ensure reliability from the very first stroke.

Pilot Nibs

pentop_EF.jpg EF: Extra Fine. A nib with a tip sharpened like a needle. Ideal for those who prefer extremely fine writing.
F: Fine. Similar to the EF, this is a very fine writing nib. Typically, a Western F user will feel comfortable with a Pilot FM or M.
SF: Soft Fine. A semi-flexible fine nib that provides line variation with slight pressure on downstrokes.
FM: Fine/Medium. Slightly finer than a Western MF. Typically, a Western F user will feel comfortable with a Pilot FM or M.
SFM: Soft Fine/Medium. A semi-flexible fine/medium nib that allows line variation with slight pressure on downstrokes.
M: Medium. Slightly finer than the Western M equivalent.
SM: Soft Medium. A semi-flexible medium nib that provides line variation with slight pressure on downstrokes.
B: Broad. Slightly finer than the Western B equivalent. Typically, a Western M user will feel comfortable with a Pilot B.
pentop_BB.jpg BB: Double Broad. Slightly finer than the Western BB equivalent. Typically, a Western B user will feel comfortable with a Pilot BB.
C: Equivalent to a BBB. A very broad nib that allows inks to show shading at the end of strokes. Not suitable for small handwriting.
SU: Stub. A calligraphic stub nib with horizontal and vertical line variation, adding character to writing.
FA: Falcon. One of the few truly flexible gold nibs available today. Offers line variation with pressure, and when unpressed can be used like a traditional F or FM. A versatile and expressive writing experience.
WA: Waverly. A nib designed by Pilot craftsmen with slightly upturned tines, created to provide maximum smoothness in fine writing regardless of the writing angle.
PO: Posting. Another exclusive Pilot design, with downward-curved tines and minimal contact with the paper. Originally developed for use on low-quality Japanese postcards where other pens would feather. Ideal for fine writing lovers.
pentop_MS.jpg MS: Music. One of Pilot’s most sought-after nibs, featuring three tines to increase ink flow. Originally designed for vertical writing on music stands, it is now appreciated for its strong horizontal and vertical line variation, enhancing ink shading and colour expression.
