The Eboya Kyouka Wakaba Large Fountain Pen is a handcrafted writing instrument made in Tokyo by Eboya, the fountain pen brand of Nikko Ebonite. The name “Kyouka” (きょうか/響華, echo and flower) derives from the Japanese expression kyoukasuigetsu, a poetic metaphor for ideal beauty—difficult to grasp, yet unmistakable when achieved. The Wakaba finish—meaning “young leaves” or “new shoots” (わかば/若葉)—combines green and black in an organic marbled pattern that conveys freshness, balance, and visual depth.
Used in a symbolic and poetic sense, wakaba evokes beginnings, renewal, and vitality, closely associated with spring and the vivid green of newly grown leaves. In Japanese design and craftsmanship, the term suggests a balance between natural energy and calmness rather than a fixed or literal color.
The Kyouka model draws inspiration from the classic Onoto style—a straight, minimalist design that originated in the United Kingdom in 1905 with the legendary “Onoto The Pen” by Thomas De La Rue & Co. Introduced to Japan in 1919, this style was embraced by renowned writers such as Natsume Sōseki and became synonymous with functional elegance and timeless restraint.
The origin of the name “Onoto” remains debated. Some theories link it to the Japanese watchmaker Ono Tokusaburō, others to the vegetable pigment onoto (annatto) used in printing, or to an evolution of the term Nota Bene. The loss of historical archives during the London bombings of 1940 prevents definitive confirmation, yet the design itself endures as a lasting reference.
Eboya reinterprets this heritage in the Kyouka series, adapting the classic form to a modern cartridge-converter system. The body is hand-turned from green-and-black marbled ebonite developed exclusively by Nikko Ebonite Manufacturing, revealing a deep finish that subtly changes with the light. As with all Eboya pens, it is engraved with Eboya Made in Tokyo. The precise assembly of every component, combined with the layered color of the ebonite, results in a fountain pen of remarkable beauty and quality.
The Eboya Kyouka Wakaba Large features a 14K gold nib, carefully adjusted to deliver a smooth, controlled, and expressive writing experience. It uses an international cartridge or converter filling system, compatible with brands such as Pelikan or Rotring (not compatible with Montblanc, Waterman, or Caran d’Ache). Each body is hand-turned and polished in Tokyo, and every pen is individually assembled and inspected to ensure consistent performance from the very first use.

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or humidity and store the pen in a dark place. Occasional cleaning with a soft cloth is sufficient to maintain its finish.
What is ebonite?
Ebonite is one of the earliest developed polymers, produced by vulcanizing natural rubber with sulfur (between 25% and 50%). Its name comes from ebony, a material it replaced due to its durability, warmth to the touch, and stability. In the Large size, the pen offers a solid, substantial presence, ideal for writers who appreciate a confident, comfortable instrument.
Who is the Large size best suited for?
It is ideal for those who prefer pens with a strong presence and a thicker, stable body, particularly comfortable for medium to large hands or for extended writing sessions.
Can it be used without posting the cap?
Yes. At 142 mm capped, the pen is perfectly balanced for use without posting.
Is the Wakaba color uniform?
No. As marbled ebonite is used, each pen displays unique variations in the green and black pattern, making every piece slightly different.
Is it compatible with inks from other brands?
Yes. It can be used with international cartridges or converters compatible with brands such as Pelikan or Rotring (not compatible with Montblanc, Waterman, or Caran d’Ache), as well as bottled inks from any compatible manufacturer.
Eboya is the in-house brand of Nikko Ebonite Manufacturing, Japan’s last specialist producer of ebonite. Founded in 1952, this family-run company has supplied ebonite to historic pen makers such as Sailor and Pilot. In 2009, they launched their own line of fountain pens, combining decades of technical expertise with a refined aesthetic vision. Each pen is entirely made in Tokyo, preserving an artisanal tradition focused on durability, functionality, and honesty of material.
“Like young leaves in spring, Wakaba accompanies every line with balance and quiet vitality.”
