The Eboya Houga Shinkai Deep Blue Sea Medium is a handcrafted fountain pen made in Tokyo by Eboya, the writing instruments brand of Nikko Ebonite
The Eboya Houga Shinkai Deep Blue Sea Medium is a handcrafted fountain pen made in Tokyo by Eboya, the writing instruments brand of Nikko Ebonite — Japan’s only ebonite manufacturer since 1952, and supplier of this material to other renowned companies such as Pilot and Sailor. Its marbled “Shinkai” finish evokes the depth of the ocean, with a unique blue pattern that offers both visual warmth and a silky, non-slip feel, allowing for comfortable writing over long sessions. The name “Houga” (萌芽) means “bud” or “sprout,” symbolizing the birth of new ideas with every stroke.
This model follows the classic “Torpedo” or “Cigar” shape, with clean lines and balanced proportions that embody Japanese minimalism. The body is turned from ebonite and polished to achieve a flawless natural sheen. Beyond its beauty, ebonite provides a smooth, secure grip that reduces hand strain during extended writing. Its marbled patterns are created by manually layering raw rubber sheets with colored materials — a complex process that ensures each pen is visually one-of-a-kind. This design is exclusive to Nikko Ebonite Manufacturing.
Within the Houga series, eight colors are produced: “Tanshin” (red), “Nichibo” (orange), “Kogetsu” (yellow), “Wakaba” (yellow-green), “Kunpu” (green), “Shinkai” (blue), “Shinryu” (beige), and “Black Ebonite” (solid black). Availability may vary. Please contact us if a specific color is not in stock.
Fitted with a 14K gold nib (Bock), the Medium version delivers smooth, controlled, and precise writing. It uses an international standard cartridge/converter filling system, compatible with brands such as Pelikan or Rotring (not compatible with Montblanc, Waterman, or Caran d’Ache). Each body is individually crafted, continuing the tradition of Tokyo’s skilled workshops.

Eboya is the fountain pen brand of Nikko Ebonite, founded in 1952 and the only ebonite factory still operating in Japan. Until 2016, production was led by master turner Noritoshi Kanesaki, a disciple of the legendary nibmeister Kubo Kohei, bringing a valuable artisanal heritage to the company. Today, Eboya continues to combine traditional techniques with meticulous polishing to create pens that are durable, comfortable, and unique.
“Let the depth of the Shinkai blue inspire every word you write.”
