Compatibility with Pilot and Namiki fountain pens

These cartridges use Pilot’s proprietary format and are compatible with Pilot and Namiki fountain pens designed to accept the brand’s ink cartridges or converters. They cannot be used with the Pilot Custom 823 or Pilot Custom Heritage 92 because those pens have integrated filling mechanisms. They are also unsuitable for Namiki models that rely exclusively on an integrated filling system.

Compatibility should be checked carefully for vintage pens, special editions and models manufactured for particular regional markets. Some European versions may use a different cartridge standard. The correct refill depends on the filling mechanism of the individual pen rather than solely on the Pilot or Namiki name appearing on its body.

How to install a cartridge

Remove the pen barrel and hold the fountain pen with its nib pointing upward. Insert the cartridge straight into the section until it is firmly seated, without turning or twisting it. Allow a short time for the ink to reach the feed. If the pen does not begin writing, gently press both sides of the cartridge to encourage the ink towards the nib, then test it again on paper.

Handling and storage

Keep unused cartridges sealed until required and store them away from strong heat and direct sunlight. Replace the cartridge with the nib pointing upward to reduce the risk of spills. Before changing between Brown, Violet, Pink or another colour, clean the fountain pen according to Pilot’s care guidance and avoid mixing different inks inside the feed.

Brand history and philosophy

Pilot’s story began in 1918 when Ryosuke Namiki and Masao Wada, both trained in the Japanese merchant marine, founded Namiki Manufacturing. Their maritime experience inspired them to address a problem affecting early fountain pens: deterioration caused by corrosion during long sea journeys. Their ambition was to create a reliable Japanese writing instrument capable of earning international recognition.

The Pilot name refers to the maritime pilot who safely guides ships and reflects the founders’ desire to lead the writing instrument industry into new territory. More than a century later, the company continues to follow five guiding principles centred on balance, cooperation, perseverance, daily progress and sincerity.
