Ebonite fountain pen. Aka tamenuri Urushi Lacquered
Izumo Taisha, located in western Honshu, is one of the oldest and most sacred Shinto shrines in Japan. According to legend, it was founded by the sun goddess Amaterasu Ōmikami. This iconic site lends its name and spirit to Platinum’s Izumo collection—fountain pens crafted from ebonite and coated with traditional Japanese urushi lacquer, and decorated using the intricate art of maki-e. This piece is ideal for connoisseurs seeking refinement, heritage, and masterful craftsmanship.
The Yakumo Byakudan motif is inspired by the "floating clouds" painted on the ceiling of the Izumo Shrine. In this piece, the sea of clouds appears in vibrant colored urushi, contrasted by silver-lined outlines. The design is revealed through the Togi-Yakumo technique: a complex polishing process that gradually uncovers the multi-layered lacquer, bringing a unique depth and texture that changes over time.
Byakudan-nuri refers to the finish’s evolving color, reminiscent of sandalwood (Byakudan) used in traditional incense ceremonies. As the urushi ages and becomes more transparent, the hidden patterns emerge more clearly, creating a mystical and luxurious visual experience. This is one of three exclusive Izumo Yakumonuri models inspired by the shrine’s ceiling paintings.
The 18K gold nib offers a smooth, elegant writing flow. Available in Fine (F), Medium (M), and Broad (B), this pen is a pleasure to use whether for daily writing or ceremonial occasions.
