The Taccia Kaku-tate Umegasane Fountain Pen combines Japanese craftsmanship with a modern geometric aesthetic. Its barrel and cap are precision‐turned from twelve‐sided ebonite and coated with multiple layers of Umegasane red urushi lacquer (ripe plum color). Each lacquer‐dry‐polish cycle enhances the contrast between the flat faces and deeper edges, showcasing a dodecagonal form with remarkable depth. The final polish yields a uniform, glowing finish that highlights the skill of the artisan who created it.
Concept & Design
The design of the Taccia Kaku-tate Umegasane celebrates mathematical perfection via its twelve-sided cylindrical body. Each side of ebonite is perfectly turned to form a dodecagonal prism, which, once coated with layers of Umegasane red urushi lacquer, develops a unique texture and depth. Successive lacquering, drying, and polishing cycles accentuate the contrast between the flat faces and the edges, reflecting both geometric precision and the warmth of natural lacquer. This entirely manual process—combining tradition with modern techniques—imbues the pen with a visual balance where craftsmanship is evident in every detail.
Functionality & Filling System
Equipped with a two-tone 14K gold nib, meticulously manufactured and tuned by Sailor in Japan, this pen delivers a smooth, consistent ink flow—perfect for daily writing, calligraphy, or quick sketches. Its filling system accommodates either a Sailor cartridge or converter, providing users with flexibility. The smooth, airtight threading allows the cap to be screwed and unscrewed in a single turn, achieving a perfect seal and ensuring the pen is instantly ready to write. With a body diameter of 13.8 mm and a total length of 150 mm, this 30 g pen strikes the ideal balance between portability and stability during extended writing sessions.
Brand History & Philosophy
Taccia is a Japanese brand of fountain pens, inks, and pen cases made with kimono fabrics. Founded in 2003 by Shu-Jen Lin in California, Taccia’s original mission was to offer pens featuring traditional Japanese decorative techniques—such as urushi lacquer, raden (mother-of-pearl), ebonite bodies, and minimalist design—exclusively in the United States and Canada.
In 2011, the American division of the Japanese company Itoya acquired Taccia and appointed Shu-Jen Lin as Brand Manager of Itoya USA to ensure continuity in design and style.
On April 1, 2018, Taccia was acquired by Nakabayashi (established 1923 in Osaka). Under Nakabayashi, Taccia continues producing distinctly Japanese‐inspired designs and relies exclusively on Sailor for nib manufacturing, guaranteeing high quality and tradition in every pen.
Attention to detail is evident in features such as the perfect cap seal—thanks to an internal spring mechanism—and the urushi lacquer applied to the grip section. Pens are presented in refined cases to ensure protection and impeccable presentation.
Warranty
Taccia stands behind its products with a Limited Lifetime Mechanical Warranty for the original owner. This warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship for the life of the product. It does not cover damage resulting from user abuse, misuse, or any non‐factory alterations.
