Eboya is Japan’s last remaining ebonite manufacturer. Each pen reflects a deep commitment to traditional craftsmanship and material innovation. Ebonite—one of the earliest polymers—is made by vulcanizing pure rubber with sulfur (25% to 50%), valued for its resilience and natural sheen. The name comes from “ebony,” which it was originally intended to replace. Every pen bears the engraving Eboya Made in Tokyo, a mark of its origin and authenticity.
Design and inspiration
The Hakobune (箱船) model, meaning “ark” or “large ship” in Japanese, conveys the idea of strength and elegance in motion. The Kunpuu Leefy Wind edition features a deep green tone with lighter marbling, evoking the rustling of leaves carried by the wind. The barrel is made of marbled ebonite colored on a black ebonite base, an original product of Nikko Ebonite Manufacturing. Each piece is unique due to the natural variations of the marbling, and the clipless design enhances its continuous and balanced silhouette.

Fitted with a 14K gold nib, carefully tuned by the artisans of Nikko Ebonite Manufacturing, the Hakobune Kunpuu Leefy Wind Medium ensures smooth, precise and comfortable writing. Eboya is the signature brand of Nikko Ebonite Manufacturing, founded in 1952 and recognized as the last Japanese company specializing in ebonite. For decades, it supplied this material to prestigious pen makers such as Sailor and Pilot. In 2009, it launched its own line of fountain pens, combining technical mastery with refined Japanese aesthetics. Until 2016, production was led by master turner Noritoshi Kanesaki, disciple of the legendary nibmeister Kubo Kohei, bringing a unique artisanal legacy. Today, Eboya continues to create durable, comfortable writing instruments with unmistakable craftsmanship.
