Eboya Houga Kuroi Black Medium Fountain Pen

The Eboya Houga Kuroi Black Medium Fountain Pen is a beautiful example of Japanese minimalism and material mastery. Handcrafted in Tokyo from natural ebonite, it belongs to Eboya’s Houga series—a name that means “sprout” or “germination” in Japanese. This reflects the brand’s desire to create writing instruments that inspire creativity and new beginnings.

Concept and Design

The Houga model embraces the traditional “cigar” or “torpedo” silhouette, known for its clean lines and perfectly balanced shape. Made from black ebonite—a material created by vulcanizing pure rubber with sulfur (25–50%)—the pen has a deep, organic warmth. The name ebonite derives from “ebony,” due to its natural sheen and resilience. Each pen is engraved with “Eboya Made in Tokyo”, a quiet mark of authenticity and care.

Ebonite is a living material. Over time, it may subtly shift in tone and develop a matte patina that tells your personal story. To maintain its luster, avoid direct sunlight and moisture, and clean it occasionally with a soft cloth. This pen contains no clip or metallic trim, allowing the material’s elegance to take the spotlight.

Writing Experience

The pen is fitted with a 14K gold nib that writes smoothly with consistent ink flow. This Medium nib size offers a nice balance between expressiveness and control, perfect for everyday use. The pen fills using an international standard cartridge or converter, offering flexibility whether you prefer convenience or bottled inks.

Brand History and Philosophy

Eboya is the signature brand of Nikko Ebonite Mfg, Japan’s last manufacturer of natural ebonite. Founded in 1952, this family-owned company has long supplied ebonite to major Japanese penmakers. In 2009, they began creating pens under their own name, combining technical skill with refined Japanese aesthetics. Each pen is handcrafted in their Tokyo workshop, blending tradition with precision. The result: instruments built to last, with soul in every stroke.

"A timeless design that invites new beginnings—crafted to inspire, built to endure."
