Born in Sweden in 1931, Lisa Larson studied ceramic art in Gothenburg before joining the Gustavsberg porcelain factory after being discovered by designer Stig Lindberg. During her long career there, she helped shape a celebrated period of Swedish ceramics. Her animals, characterised by simple forms, gentle humour and warm expressions, became enduring examples of Scandinavian design.
Larson later worked independently and opened her own ceramic studio in 1992. Her work attracted collectors around the world and found a particularly enthusiastic audience in Japan, where characters such as Mikey the cat became widely recognised. In 2022, she received a medal from the Swedish government for her contribution to arts and crafts. She passed away in 2024, leaving a visual legacy that continues through ceramics, textiles and everyday objects.
mt is produced by Kamoi Kakoshi, a Japanese adhesive specialist whose manufacturing history dates back to 1923. Its stationery masking tape began after three enthusiasts presented the company with a handmade booklet showing imaginative uses for what had traditionally been an industrial material. They also requested tapes in new colours, inspiring a development process that resulted in an initial range of twenty shades.
Since then, mt has explored how a small and functional roll of tape can become a medium for colour, illustration and personal expression. Its collaborations with international artists bring different creative languages to Japanese washi paper while retaining the brand’s practical qualities. Leaves Series reflects this approach by translating Lisa Larson’s warm and playful imagery into a simple material designed for everyday use.
