Haibara’s history and philosophy

Haibara was founded by Sasuke Nakamura in 1806 in Nihonbashi, Edo, now Tokyo. From its earliest years, the company specialised in manufacturing and selling fine Japanese washi and paper goods. Washi remains at the heart of Haibara, while its delicate ganpi paper became one of the house’s most emblematic products.

Alongside its writing papers, Haibara produces and sells chiyogami paper decorated with original designs. Many of these patterns come from its historical archive and from its connections with notable Japanese artists, including Shibata Zeshin, Kawanabe Kyōsai, Kawabata Gyokushō and Takehisa Yumeji. Their visual legacy continues through notebooks, letter paper and other everyday paper objects.

During the nineteenth century, Haibara’s papers and decorative goods began appearing at major international exhibitions. In 1873, the company also took part in producing one of Japan’s earliest official postcards, contributing to the development of written correspondence during the formative years of the country’s modern postal system.

More than two centuries later, Haibara continues to combine knowledge of traditional washi, original pattern design and practical paper craftsmanship.
