The History and Philosophy of Haibara

Haibara was founded by Sasuke Nakamura in Nihonbashi, Edo, now Tokyo, in 1806. From the beginning, the company specialised in producing and selling high-quality Japanese washi and paper goods. Washi remains at the heart of Haibara, while its delicate ganpi paper became one of the house’s most recognised products.

Alongside its writing papers, Haibara produces and sells chiyogami decorated with original designs. Many of these patterns come from its historical archive and its relationships with artists including Shibata Zeshin, Kawanabe Kyosai, Kawabata Gyokusho and Takehisa Yumeji. Flowers, geometric forms and auspicious symbols continue to appear across the company’s notebooks, correspondence sets and other paper goods.

During the nineteenth century, Haibara’s papers and products began to reach audiences outside Japan through major international exhibitions. In 1873, the company also contributed to the production of one of Japan’s earliest official postcards, taking part in the development of written correspondence during the first years of the country’s modern postal system.

More than two centuries later, Haibara continues to combine knowledge of washi, the preservation of original patterns and the creation of paper goods for daily life.
