An A5 notebook for writing and planning

With 368 pages, the notebook provides ample room for a long-form journal, study notes, project planning or a personal ink archive. The A5 format offers a comfortable writing area while remaining easier to handle and carry than a larger desktop notebook.

The full-page 5 mm dot grid is printed in a restrained indigo tone. It can guide handwriting, headings, tables, diagrams and page layouts without imposing the stronger visual structure of a continuous square grid.

SAKAE New Sub Dot Grid

Each guide point is formed from tiny sub-dots separated by minute spaces. SAKAE developed this New Sub Dot Grid to reduce the amount of ink used to print the ruling and help limit bleed-through where handwritten lines cross the printed guide. The dots provide structure when required while allowing the writing ink to remain the visual focus of the page.

52gsm Tomoe River FP paper

The notebook contains white 52gsm Tomoe River FP paper manufactured in Japan by Sanzen Paper Manufacturing. The FP designation refers to the range’s fountain pen focus: writing paper created to reveal ink colour, shading and the surface sheen produced by certain formulations. Its smooth surface also supports controlled, detailed handwriting across a wide range of nib sizes.

Because the paper is exceptionally thin, writing may remain visible from the reverse. This show-through, often called ghosting, is not the same as bleed-through. Bleed-through occurs only when ink penetrates the sheet and marks the opposite face. Results can vary with ink saturation, nib width and flow, drying time and repeated strokes over the same area.

Hardcover construction and thread-sewn binding

The thread-sewn binding supports comfortable opening and makes the area close to the spine easier to use. A rigid cover provides stability and protection for a notebook designed to hold extensive writing. The Tomoe River FP symbol and paper paper mark are foil-stamped on the cover, while the included transparent protector helps preserve its exterior during regular use and transport.

History and philosophy of SAKAE Technical Paper

SAKAE Technical Paper is a Japanese company involved in the planning, manufacture, conversion and sale of paper and stationery products. The present company was established in 2016, continuing a paper-goods tradition connected with the Tochiman name since 1960. Through its paper paper brand, SAKAE explores paper as a practical and expressive medium for writing, drawing and creative work.

Tomoe River paper was originally manufactured by Tomoegawa. In 2021, the company announced the transfer of the relevant sales agreements, trademark rights and inventory to Sanzen Paper Manufacturing, which continued production and sales. Introduced by SAKAE in June 2023, this current notebook uses Sanzen-made Tomoe River paper while preserving the thin profile and fountain-pen-oriented writing experience associated with the FP range.
