Unruled pages for flexible thinking

Without lines or grids, every page can adapt to the idea in front of you. Combine handwriting, diagrams, mind maps and small drawings, change the scale of your notes or leave open space around important thoughts. Each two-page spread becomes a continuous surface rather than a fixed template.

The blank layout is equally useful for calligraphy, illustration and mixed visual notes. A5 provides enough space for detailed work without making the notebook difficult to carry, so it can move comfortably between a desk, meeting, classroom, studio or journey.

Cream MD PAPER for fountain pens

The pages are made from cream MD PAPER, developed around the relationship between ink, writing instrument and surface. Its texture combines an easy glide with a measured degree of feedback, allowing the writer to feel the movement of the nib without interrupting the natural writing rhythm.

Cream MD PAPER joined the range in 2006. Its warm colour is gentle on the eyes and avoids the stronger contrast of bright white paper during long sessions. Black, blue-black and coloured inks remain clear on the page, while the paper provides good resistance to feathering, bleeding and show-through.

MD PAPER is produced with hardwood pulp, which allows a softer finish than the firmer fibres obtained from coniferous trees. Water purity, pulp refining and colour consistency are carefully controlled during production. The resulting surface also works comfortably with rollerballs, ballpoint pens, pencils, mechanical pencils and coloured pencils.

Thread-sewn binding that opens flat

The signatures are joined using a durable thread-sewn binding. This construction allows the notebook to open completely flat at 180 degrees, keeping the pages comfortably extended and making it easier to write or draw close to the centre fold.

A design reduced to the essentials

Instead of concealing its construction beneath a conventional hard cover, the notebook leaves the binding cloth visible along the spine. MD PAPER is used for both the inner pages and the cover, creating a consistent visual and tactile experience.

A glassine paper wrapper protects the exterior and recalls the understated jackets of vintage paperbacks. It can remain in place throughout the life of the notebook or be removed to reveal the natural feel of the paper. The included index stickers identify the contents, owner or dates without disrupting the minimalist design.

Brand history and philosophy

The history of MIDORI began in 1950 with the production of letter paper, notebooks and sketchbooks. During the 1960s, the company developed the writing paper that would become the foundation of MD PAPER PRODUCTS, a range centred on writing pleasure and restrained designs that allow materials to speak for themselves.

MD Notebook was introduced in 2008 to bring out the qualities of MD PAPER through a flat-opening binding and a design reduced to its essentials. In 2026, MD PAPER PRODUCTS separated from MIDORI to become the independent MD PRODUCT brand, with both brands remaining part of Designphil.

MD PRODUCT sees writing as a pause that helps organise thoughts and make room for personal ideas. The brand calls this precious time for facing oneself, arranging thoughts and expressing an honest personal sensibility Yohaku.
