Pilot Custom Heritage 92 Transparent Blue Fountain Pen
The Pilot Custom Heritage 92 Transparent Blue Fountain Pen makes its ink supply and filling mechanism a visible part of the design. Its translucent blue resin body is paired with a 14K gold nib and a high-capacity integrated piston system. It is ideal for frequent writers looking for a precise, balanced and distinctive Japanese fountain pen without unnecessary decoration.
Concept and design
The transparent blue finish does not conceal the pen’s internal structure. Instead, it adds a subtle blue tone to the ink while allowing the reservoir, piston and part of the mechanism to remain visible. Silver-coloured details and the rhodium-plated nib create a consistent, understated appearance. The screw-on cap protects the nib and provides additional security when the pen is being carried.
Functionality and filling system
The Custom Heritage 92 uses a piston mechanism operated from the rear of the barrel. To fill the pen, lower the piston, immerse the nib until the breather hole is covered and turn the rear knob slowly to draw ink into the reservoir. Its approximate 1.2 ml capacity supports longer writing sessions, while the transparent body makes the remaining ink level easy to check.
This model uses bottled fountain pen ink exclusively and does not accept cartridges or converters. Its rhodium-plated Pilot number 5 nib is made from 14K gold. The Transparent Blue version is confirmed in F, FM and M nib sizes. To maintain the filling mechanism, flush it with clean water before changing colours and avoid Pilot Tsuwairo pigment ink, which the manufacturer identifies as incompatible with this model.
The visible reservoir encourages experimentation with colour. Explore the Pilot Iroshizuku ink collection and discover how each shade changes the appearance of the transparent blue body.

History and philosophy of the Custom series
Pilot introduced the Custom family in 1971 to create writing instruments suited to different handwriting styles and personal preferences. The Custom Heritage 92 joined the range in 2010 and brought that philosophy to a demonstrator model with an integrated piston filler. Instead of concealing its engineering, the pen makes the mechanism part of the experience and shows intuitively how ink is stored and drawn through the body.
This attention to the nib and filling system is closely connected to Pilot’s origins. Ryosuke Namiki completed one of Japan’s first domestically manufactured 14K gold fountain pen nibs in 1916 and began producing fountain pens with Masao Wada in 1918. More than a century later, the Heritage 92 continues that pursuit of precision through a restrained, visible writing instrument designed for regular use.
“When the ink remains visible, choosing a colour becomes part of the writing itself.”
