Tamenuri urushi lacquer with Biwatame highlights at the barrel-cap junction. Includes 18K gold nib, ink bottle, converter, and kimono sleeve.
The Biwatame model from Platinum’s Izumo collection pays homage to the ancient Japanese art of urushi. Coated in deep brown Tamenuri urushi lacquer, this pen features five subtle yellow highlights—four on the body rings and one on the cap—adding quiet elegance to its refined silhouette. A perfect blend of craftsmanship, symbolism, and timeless beauty.
“Nuri” refers to traditional Japanese lacquer techniques. Tamenuri is characterized by the application of translucent urushi layers over a dark base. The process is performed entirely by master artisans. Over time, the lacquer becomes more transparent, allowing the underlayer to emerge, creating a glowing, layered effect that evolves with every use.
“Biwatame” refers to the soft yellow tone reminiscent of the loquat fruit (biwa). This hue appears subtly on the cap and body rings, contrasting beautifully against the dark brown lacquer. These golden accents enhance the visual balance and speak to the refined aesthetics of Japanese writing culture.
Crafted from ebonite, a traditional hard rubber, this pen is designed to last for generations. Its 18K gold nib delivers a smooth and elegant writing experience. Compatible with Platinum cartridges or the included converter, the Biwatame is a reliable companion for lifelong writers and collectors.
Includes a paulownia wood box, Platinum converter, kimono-style pen sleeve, official warranty card, and an ink bottle courtesy of Inktraveler. (Photos are for reference only. The nib may be delivered in the new or old version, depending on availability.)
Founded in 1919, Platinum Pen Co. is one of Japan’s most iconic writing instrument makers. The Izumo series blends urushi lacquer craftsmanship with elegant design and fine materials like ebonite. The Biwatame is a pen of quiet strength, made to accompany its owner for a lifetime—and beyond.
"Like the seasons revealing their beauty in time, the Biwatame finish deepens slowly with every passing year."
