The Platinum 3776 Century Chartres Blue RT is a fountain pen that captures the elegance and serenity of Gothic art. Its translucent deep blue resin body is inspired by the luminous stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral in France—widely regarded as some of the most beautiful in the world. The unique shade evokes both depth and clarity, as if each word written were touched by colored light.
Chartres Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The stained glasses that have a historic value are from the 11th to the 13th centuries and are known worldwide for their beauty. The deep colors of the glass—especially the remarkable blue—are believed to be nearly impossible to replicate with modern techniques. While advancements in glassmaking have resulted in brighter tones, the richness and depth of the so-called "Chartres Blue" remain unmatched, earning it recognition as a color name in its own right. This pen pays homage to that legendary hue, seeking to bring its emotional and visual depth into the world of writing instruments.
The rhodium-plated trim provides a clean contrast to the rich blue resin, adding to the pen’s refined, contemporary look. Ideal for those who value subtle beauty and precise engineering, this pen blends cultural inspiration with reliable Japanese functionality.
The 3776 Century series by Platinum represents the pinnacle of writing design. Named after Mount Fuji’s elevation (3,776 meters), it symbolizes the brand’s pursuit of perfection. In the Chartres Blue edition, this timeless shape is elevated by a color that speaks of light, history, and contemplation.
Equipped with Platinum’s patented Slip & Seal mechanism, the cap ensures the ink won’t dry out—even after a year of non-use. The result is a dependable writing instrument that starts smoothly every time. The pen uses Platinum cartridges or the included converter for bottled inks.
The pen includes a Platinum converter, a blue-black ink cartridge, and a complimentary ink bottle from Inktraveler. It is presented in a standard gift box, suitable for personal use or as a thoughtful present. (Images are for reference only. Actual product may vary slightly.)
Founded in 1919, Platinum Pen Co. is one of Japan’s most esteemed fountain pen manufacturers. Known for blending craftsmanship with technological innovation, Platinum created the 3776 series to represent a new standard in writing excellence.
The original 3776 was designed in 1978 by the late writing expert Haruo Umeda—nicknamed “Mr. Fountain Pen”—in collaboration with Platinum’s in-house team. It quickly became a success, selling over 150,000 units in its first six months and earning lasting admiration.
Between 2009 and 2011, the series underwent a complete redesign using over 40,000 writing data points collected by Platinum’s subsidiary Nakaya. This led to the development of the Motosu and Century models, built with new materials, molds, and a commitment to performance and elegance.
"Like light through stained glass, each line carries a trace of clarity and beauty."
