Japanese fountain pen decorated with Hira maki-e and urushi lacquer. Landscape motif “Sansui”. 14k gold nib and Slip & Seal system. Gift inkwell included.
This exquisite fountain pen blends traditional Japanese artistry with modern writing performance. The motif, “Sansui” (mountains and water), evokes serene natural landscapes, meticulously rendered using the Hira makie technique—an elegant flat-style lacquer decoration applied by hand onto a black AS resin body coated with authentic urushi lacquer.
Hira makie (literally “flat sprinkled painting”) is one of the oldest and most refined maki-e techniques. The design is painted using colored urushi, dusted with fine metallic powders (such as gold or silver), then sealed under multiple transparent lacquer layers. After polishing, the surface becomes perfectly smooth, revealing a subtle, lustrous image embedded in the lacquer itself.
Urushi, or Japanese lacquer, is a natural resin harvested from the lacquer tree. With a history of over 7,000 years, urushi is prized for its strength, gloss, and longevity. Once applied, it appears dark, but gradually becomes translucent over time, enhancing the depth and clarity of the artwork with age. This natural transformation gives each pen a unique and evolving beauty.
Equipped with a large 14k gold nib, the pen delivers a fluid, responsive writing experience. Its patented Slip & Seal mechanism ensures long-term ink retention, even after a year of non-use—a hallmark of the 3776 Century series.
The Sansui Kaga Hira makie is part of the prestigious 3776 Century line, named after the height of Mount Fuji (3,776 meters) and created to mark Platinum’s 100th anniversary. It represents the pinnacle of writing tradition and technical innovation.
Presented in a luxury gift box, the pen includes a Platinum converter, one ink cartridge, and a gift inkwell courtesy of Inktraveler.
