Yakusugi: a symbol of eternity

The term Yakusugi refers to cedar trees from Yakushima that are more than 1,000 years old and naturally grow at elevations above 500 meters above sea level. Some specimens live for more than 2,000 years, becoming symbols of longevity, prosperity, and eternity. In 1993, approximately 21% of Yakushima Island (10,747 hectares) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, with the ancient Yakusugi cedars being the main reason for its inclusion. Logging of these trees is prohibited: only Edo-period stumps or naturally fallen trees can be used, making every piece crafted from Yakusugi extremely valuable and rare.
