Sailor Kirikane Asaba Fountain Pen

The Sailor Kirikane Asaba fountain pen is created for those who appreciate fine writing instruments as both functional tools and expressions of traditional Japanese art. Based on Sailor’s 110th anniversary commemorative model, this fountain pen features an ebonite body decorated using the kirikane technique with genuine gold leaf. It is especially suited to collectors and writing enthusiasts who value craftsmanship, symbolism, and timeless design.

The decoration is crafted by kirikane artist Kasen Otsuka, born in Kyoto, who is recognized for her work in traditional Japanese metal and gold leaf techniques. Her career includes selections for major Japanese craft exhibitions and international recognition, including the Kyoto Design Award and demonstrations at the Frankfurt Crafts Museum. Each pen reflects her precise and disciplined approach to this highly demanding art form.

The surface is adorned with the Asaba (hemp leaf) pattern, created using real gold leaf. The process begins by bonding sheets of gold leaf together, which are then cut into extremely thin strips using a bamboo knife. A natural adhesive made from seaweed and animal glue, known as nikawa, is prepared and applied to the surface. The finely cut gold is picked up with a brush and carefully placed by hand to form the geometric pattern. Once the design is complete, a final layer of urushi lacquer is applied to protect the decoration and enhance its depth.

A translucent layer of urushi lacquer adds warmth and visual depth while preserving the clarity of the kirikane pattern beneath. The cap is designed without a clip and features a discreet roll-stop tab, preventing the pen from rolling on the desk while maintaining a clean and balanced silhouette.

What is Kirikane?

Kirikane is a traditional Japanese decorative technique introduced to Japan in the 6th century through Buddhism. It involves cutting gold, silver, or platinum leaf into extremely thin strips and applying them as patterns using a brush and natural adhesive (nikawa). Originally developed for decorating Buddhist statues and paintings, kirikane is now practiced mainly in Kyoto and reserved for exceptional art and craft objects.

Asaba – Hemp Leaf Pattern

Asaba, or hemp leaf, is a hexagonal geometric pattern that has been used since the Heian period to decorate Buddhist statues. Hemp is known for its rapid and healthy growth, symbolizing vitality, protection, and the healthy development of children. Traditionally, the Asaba pattern has also been believed to ward off evil.

In Japanese tradition, the hemp leaf (Asaba) motif refers exclusively to the industrial hemp plant used historically for textiles and crafts, and carries no association with recreational or psychoactive use.

The presentation box is made from Japanese chestnut wood, a material valued since ancient times for its hardness, resistance to moisture, and durability. Finished with a traditional nagurime texture, the solid wooden box protects the fountain pen during transport and reinforces its status as a collectible object.

While this model is typically produced on a made-to-order basis, Inktraveler offers immediate availability with shipping from Spain and official Sailor warranty, allowing you to enjoy this exceptional fountain pen without waiting times.
