The Sailor Kirikane Enami Fountain Pen blends traditional Japanese kirikane decoration with a sea wave inspired pattern. Fitted with a 21K gold nib, it delivers smooth, precise and balanced writing. Designed for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate craftsmanship as much as performance.
The Sailor Kirikane Enami fountain pen is created for those who value writing instruments as refined tools shaped by centuries of Japanese craftsmanship. Based on Sailor’s 110th anniversary commemorative model, this fountain pen features an ebonite body decorated using the kirikane technique with genuine gold leaf. It is an exceptional piece for collectors and writing enthusiasts who appreciate symbolism, precision, and timeless design.
The decoration is crafted by kirikane artist Kasen Otsuka, born in Kyoto and internationally recognized for her work with traditional gold leaf techniques. Each fountain pen reflects her disciplined and meticulous approach, applying kirikane by hand to achieve patterns of remarkable clarity, balance, and depth.
The Enami (sea wave) pattern is formed by cutting real gold leaf into extremely fine strips and placing them individually using a brush and natural adhesive. The motif depicts waves spreading endlessly across the surface, creating a rhythmic and flowing composition that subtly reveals itself as the light changes. A final layer of translucent urushi lacquer is applied to protect the decoration and enhance its visual depth.
The clipless cap features a discreet roll-stop tab that prevents the pen from rolling on the desk while maintaining a clean and harmonious silhouette, in keeping with the overall design philosophy of the piece.
Kirikane is a traditional Japanese decorative technique introduced to Japan in the 6th century through Buddhism. It involves cutting gold, silver, or platinum leaf into extremely thin strips and applying them as patterns using a brush and a natural adhesive known as nikawa. Originally developed to decorate Buddhist statues and paintings, kirikane is now practiced mainly in Kyoto and reserved for exceptional works of art and craftsmanship.
Enami, meaning “sea wave,” is a traditional pattern that, like the hemp leaf motif, has been used since ancient times to decorate Buddhist statues. The continuously spreading waves symbolize the blessings of the vast oceans, future happiness, and a peaceful life. The endless flow of the pattern conveys harmony, continuity, and calm strength.
The presentation box is made from Japanese chestnut wood, a material valued since ancient times for its hardness, resistance to moisture, and durability. Finished with a traditional nagurime texture, the solid wooden box protects the fountain pen and reinforces its character as a collectible object.
