The Sailor Manyo Asagiri Morning Fog 50 ml fountain pen ink is a special edition created to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Sailor's Manyo collection. Inspired by the Japanese word asagiri (朝霧), meaning “morning fog”, this ink has a delicate pinkish-violet tone with soft, misty nuances reminiscent of Japanese mountains veiled in fog at dawn. An atmospheric and melancholic color for those who enjoy unhurried writing and Japanese inks with emotional depth and poetic sensitivity.

Manyo and the spirit of Japanese poetry

Manyosyu is often regarded as an authentic expression of the Japanese spirit, but the name refers to an anthology known as the Manyosyu, or “Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves”, Japan's oldest and most revered poetry anthology. Over a period of four centuries, 4,516 poems were written by people from every social class, from farmers to emperors; most were anonymous or incorrectly attributed to more famous authors.

The compiler, or the last of a series of compilers, is believed to have been Ōtomo no Yakamochi, and the last poem recorded in the collection dates from 759 CE. As was customary, the collection was divided into four periods and arranged in twenty books, reflecting a practice seen in Chinese poetry collections of the time. Manyo is an abbreviation of Manyosyu, whose meaning alludes to “people of every social rank”.

These poems focus primarily on nature and the seasons, using them as symbols of emotions, human relationships, political concerns and the myths of their time. For this special fifth-anniversary edition, Sailor selected poems about unrequited love and transformed the natural elements appearing in them into ink.

Asagiri and the poem behind its color

Asagiri ink is inspired by a poem that compares uncertain, indistinct love to the morning fog:

“Because we have only met vaguely, like the morning fog, I continue to love you as if my life were about to end.”

That feeling of distance, fragility and suspended longing becomes a misty pink shade with violet nuances and subtle cool variations depending on the light and paper used. The reference to Japanese morning fog is especially fitting: a soft mist that blurs mountains and landscapes in the first moments of dawn. Sailor presents this edition with a special gold foil-stamped label exclusive to the anniversary release.
