The Sailor Philosophy

The name Yamadori (山鳥) literally means “mountain bird” and holds a significant place in Japanese culture. It appears in classical poetry, including works from the Manyōshū and the famous poem by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro featured in the Hyakunin Isshu, where the long tail of the yamadori serves as a metaphor for a seemingly endless night of solitude. Over the centuries, this bird has inspired folklore, traditional stories and literary references. Although Sailor has never officially explained the origin of the name, it is difficult not to associate the depth and changing character of this ink with the cultural richness that Yamadori has represented in Japan for generations.
