This symbolism comes from a fascinating linguistic and natural connection. The word daidai (代々) also means “from generation to generation” in Japanese. The association developed because the fruits remain on the tree for an unusually long period, often staying in place even after the next season's fruits have appeared. It is therefore common to see fruits from different generations growing on the same tree at the same time.

For this reason, daidai became a traditional symbol of family continuity and good fortune, and it is still used in Japanese New Year decorations such as kagami mochi, where it represents the wish that prosperity may continue through future generations.
