The Taccia Hyakko-Hisho Urushi Tomoshibi Fountain Pen belongs to the second edition of the 百工比照漆万年筆(第二弾) (“Hyakko-Hisho Urushi Fountain Pen Ⅱ”) series, inspired by the 17th–18th century compendium of traditional craft knowledge. “Hyakko-Hisho” encompasses over 20,000 entries—materials ranging from paper, Urushi, woods, dyes, bamboo, ivory to metal—preserving the original techniques of that era. These pens pay tribute to that historical legacy, allowing you to experience firsthand the artisan heritage passed down through generations.

Concept & Design

The design of the Hyakko-Hisho Urushi Tomoshibi takes inspiration from samurai sword scabbards, projecting the strength and resolve of those warriors onto modern users. The barrel and cap are turned from ebonite and coated with Tomoshibi brown Urushi lacquer, applied in successive layers to achieve a warm, deep sheen. Each lacquer-dry-polish cycle highlights nuanced brown tones—some areas appear earthy dark, others a soft reddish hue—reflecting both the nobility of steel and the vibrant flame that “Tomoshibi” (灯火) signifies. The result is a pen that conveys warmth and presence, with subtle color shifts depending on how light hits it.

Functionality & Filling System

Equipped with a two-tone 14K gold nib, crafted and finished by Sailor in Japan, this fountain pen delivers a smooth, consistent ink flow—ideal for everyday writing or more elaborate calligraphy, depending on the chosen nib size (EF/F/MF/M/B/MS). Its filling system accepts either a Sailor cartridge or converter, giving you the flexibility to choose between convenience or bottle-ink refills. Airtight threading allows the cap to be posted and unposted in a single turn, ensuring a perfect seal and immediate readiness. With a body diameter of 13.8 mm and a total length of 150 mm, weighing 30 g, this pen strikes the perfect balance between portability and stability for extended writing sessions.

Brand History & Philosophy

Taccia is a Japanese brand specializing in fountain pens, inks, and pen cases made from kimono fabrics. Founded in 2003 by Shu-Jen Lin in California, Taccia’s mission was to introduce traditional Japanese decorative techniques—such as Urushi lacquer, raden (mother-of-pearl), ebonite bodies, and minimalist design—to the U.S. and Canadian markets. In 2011, Itoya’s American division acquired Taccia and appointed Shu-Jen Lin as Brand Manager to ensure continuity in design and style. Since April 1, 2018, Taccia has been part of Nakabayashi (established in 1923 in Osaka), preserving its Japanese essence and relying exclusively on Sailor for nib manufacturing. Attention to detail is evident in the precise cap fit and the Urushi lacquer applied to the grip section. Each pen is presented in a refined case to ensure protection and impeccable presentation.

Warranty

Taccia stands behind its products with a Limited Lifetime Mechanical Warranty for the original owner. This warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship for the life of the product. It does not cover damage resulting from user abuse, misuse, or any non-factory alterations.
