Eboya is Japan’s last remaining ebonite manufacturer. Each pen reflects a deep commitment to traditional craftsmanship and technical innovation. Ebonite—one of the earliest polymers—results from vulcanizing pure rubber with sulfur (25% to 50%), valued for its durability, sheen, and warm feel. Every pen is engraved with Eboya Made in Tokyo, a true mark of authenticity and excellence.

Design and inspiration

The colour Shinryou (神龍)—which can be translated as “Dragon God”—is inspired by the mythical figure of Shenlong, the spiritual dragon of Chinese mythology who controls rain, storms, and agricultural fate. In Japan, he is known as Shinryū or Shinryou. This legendary being, revered by emperors, represents heavenly power and natural harmony. The pen, in a refined beige marbled tone, conveys serenity and the restrained strength of this creature. With a diameter of 13.6 mm—identical to the Natsume and Houju medium-sized models—it ensures stability and ergonomics, while its solid build makes it feel surprisingly robust and comfortable in hand.

Functionality and filling system

The Yuzen Shinryou features an eyedropper system that allows direct filling of the body with ink, offering a capacity of up to 3 cc. This makes it an ideal choice for heavy writers seeking long autonomy. Filling is straightforward:

1. Open the pen body by removing the nib section (photo 1).
2. Fill an eyedropper with ink (photo 2) and pour it directly into the barrel (three drops equal about 3 cc).
3. When refilling, it is advisable to wipe any residual ink inside the barrel to prevent leakage.
4. If changing inks, rinse the interior thoroughly with water before use.

In addition, the Yuzen Shinryou can be used with standard international cartridges and converters, just like all other Eboya models. This dual system makes it highly versatile. Pelikan cartridges are especially recommended for compatibility.
