Eboya Kyouka Swirl Latte Pink Medium Fountain Pen

The Eboya Kyouka Swirl Latte Pink Medium Fountain Pen is a Japanese ebonite writing instrument in a version that is exceptionally difficult to find outside Japan. Its unusual finish combines coral and dusty pink tones with broad cream and milky beige veins that flow across the pen in irregular clouds and swirls. Its Medium proportions, clipless construction and 14K gold nib create a distinctive yet comfortable fountain pen suitable for frequent writing.

Concept and Design

The name Kyouka (鏡花) comes from the Japanese expression Kyoukasuigetsu (鏡花水月), literally “the flower reflected in a mirror and the moon reflected on water”. It evokes a beautiful image that can be contemplated but cannot physically be held. Eboya chose this name to express the special character of its fountain pens and the individual appearance of their marbled ebonite.

The commercial name Swirl Latte Pink describes the visual character of this finish. Swirl refers to its flowing, wave-like marbling, while latte suggests the cream and milky beige tones blended with the dominant pink. Rather than a dark coffee brown, the material presents a soft combination of coral pink, dusty pink and pale creamy veining.

The pattern does not form a regular geometric spiral. Instead, broad clouds and undulating ribbons of colour flow around the barrel and cap. Some areas display a more intense raspberry-pink tone, while others appear softer where they meet the cream-coloured ebonite. The distribution of the material varies from one pen to another, giving every example its own visual identity.

The Kyouka revives the traditional form inspired by classic Onoto fountain pens. Its clipless construction maintains a clean and continuous silhouette, leaving a greater surface of ebonite visible. The characteristic textured decoration of the Kyouka series adds rhythm and tactile detail, while changing light reveals different nuances within the pink and cream marbling.

Functionality and Filling System

The Eboya Kyouka Swirl Latte Pink Medium is fitted with a 14K gold Bock No. 6 nib, designed to provide smooth, precise and controlled writing. Nib widths F, MF, M and B may be available subject to stock, allowing the writer to choose between a fine, detailed line and a broader, more expressive stroke.

Its filling system accepts international-standard cartridges and converters. It is compatible with products from brands such as Pelikan and Rotring, but not with the proprietary systems used by Montblanc, Waterman or Caran d’Ache. The converter makes it possible to use bottled fountain pen ink and select a colour that complements the pen’s unusual pink and cream finish.

Care and Maintenance

To preserve the colour and natural lustre of the ebonite, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, intense heat and humidity. Store the pen in a dark, dry place and clean its surface gently with a soft cloth. Flush the filling system with water before changing inks or storing the pen for an extended period. Eboya advises against using pigment inks in its fountain pens.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Swirl Latte Pink mean?
Swirl describes the flowing, wave-like marbling; latte refers to the cream and milky beige tones, while pink identifies the predominant colour.

Is this version easy to find outside Japan?
No. The Eboya Kyouka Swirl Latte Pink is exceptionally difficult to find outside Japan, and this finish is not part of the regular colours currently offered for the Kyouka collection.

Do all examples have the same pattern?
No. The pink and cream areas are distributed differently throughout each ebonite body, giving every finished pen its own individual pattern.

Does the colour change under different lighting?
Yes. Warm light may emphasise its coral tones, while other lighting conditions can reveal dusty pink, raspberry, cream or milky beige nuances.

Does this fountain pen have a clip?
No. The Kyouka has a clipless construction that preserves its continuous silhouette and allows more of the marbled ebonite to remain visible.

Which filling system does it use?
It accepts international-standard cartridges and converters. The supplied converter allows the pen to be filled directly from a bottle of fountain pen ink.

Eboya History and Philosophy

Eboya is the writing instrument brand of Nikko Ebonite Manufacturing, a Tokyo company founded in 1952 and recognised as Japan’s only manufacturer specialising in ebonite production. In 2008, the company developed its own coloured and marbled ebonite and began producing fountain pens under the Eboya name the following year.

Its knowledge of ebonite from the production stage allows Eboya to control the material’s colour, stability and finish throughout the manufacturing process. The Kyouka Swirl Latte Pink reflects this philosophy through its warm touch, balanced design and distinctive marbling, which gives every example an individual appearance.

“Like a pink cloud reflected on still water, its pattern changes with every glance.”
