Kiku means chrysanthemum in Japanese, while Zukushi conveys abundance or a composition filled entirely with one motif. The name Kiku Zukushi can therefore be understood as “an abundance of chrysanthemums” or “chrysanthemums everywhere”, reflecting the continuous succession of flowers along the tape.
The repeated floral shapes give the design a clear Japanese identity while retaining SOU·SOU’s bold and contemporary visual language. Use the tape as a continuous border or cut it into smaller sections to introduce individual chrysanthemums into a page, card or creative composition.
This masking tape belongs to the Artist Series and was created through the collaboration between mt and SOU·SOU. Based in Kyoto, SOU·SOU develops textile patterns around the idea of creating a new Japanese culture. Its work reinterprets Japan’s seasons, natural forms and atmosphere for contemporary everyday life.
By transferring the Kiku Zukushi textile pattern to adhesive washi paper, the design can become part of journals, correspondence, albums, packaging and craft projects. The compact roll preserves the character of the original pattern while making it easy to cut, layer and combine with other materials.
Made in Japan from thin washi paper, the tape combines flexibility with surprising strength. It can be torn by hand, follows the surface of paper easily and adds very little thickness to a notebook or journal. Its adhesive allows careful removal and repositioning, making it useful when developing layouts or adjusting a composition.
Use it to mark pages, seal envelopes, divide sections in a planner, decorate cards or add borders to a notebook. It also works well with stamps, inks, stickers and other masking tapes, although the chrysanthemum pattern has enough visual presence to create a complete composition on its own.

The creative story of mt began outside a conventional design studio. Three women who enjoyed experimenting with industrial masking tape collected their ideas in a small book and sent it to Kamoi Kakoshi with a simple request: they wanted tape in many more colors. Their work revealed that this technical material could also become a means of personal expression. After extensive testing, mt developed its first collection of twenty shades inspired by a box of colored pencils.
Behind that transformation stands a specialist factory with a history dating back to 1923. It originally produced masking tape for painting buildings, vehicles and furniture. Industrial expertise combined with thin Japanese washi paper made it possible to create a tape that was strong, precise and easy to remove. mt brought those technical qualities into stationery and placed them in the hands of anyone who wanted to create.
The connection between industry, design and individual creativity continues to define mt. In 2012, a former factory building became the Kamoi Kakoshi Historical Museum, while exhibitions and workshops began exploring new ways to work with tape. For mt, each roll is not a finished decoration but an open material that can be cut, layered and transformed into something personal.
