Pilot Custom 823 - Smoke Fountain Pen
The Pilot Custom 823 – Smoke is a Japanese fountain pen with a translucent smoke-gray body, 14k gold nib, and vacuum filling system. Precision and presence in every stroke.
The Pilot Custom Heritage 92 Transparent Black is a smoke-black resin demonstrator fountain pen with an integrated 1.2 ml piston filler and a rhodium-plated Pilot number 5 nib in 14K gold. Its translucent body reveals the mechanism and remaining ink level. It does not accept cartridges or converters and is available in F, B and M.
The Pilot Custom Heritage 92 Transparent Black Fountain Pen combines a visible piston mechanism with a restrained, smoke-black appearance. Its translucent resin body is fitted with an integrated high-capacity filling system and a rhodium-plated 14K gold nib. It suits frequent writers who want the practicality of a demonstrator fountain pen in a darker and more understated finish.
The black-tinted resin reveals the pen’s internal structure without leaving every component fully exposed. Ink, piston and reservoir remain visible through a subtle smoky filter, while silver-coloured rings, clip and nib stand out against the darker body. The result is a functional design that feels suitable for both professional and personal writing. A screw-on cap protects the nib when the pen is stored or carried.
The Custom Heritage 92 fills directly from a bottle. Turn the rear knob to lower the piston, immerse the nib until its breather hole is covered and rotate the knob slowly in the opposite direction to draw ink into the reservoir. Its approximate 1.2 ml capacity supports extended writing sessions, while the translucent barrel makes the remaining ink level easy to monitor.
This fountain pen does not accept cartridges or converters. It uses a rhodium-plated Pilot number 5 nib made from 14K gold. The Transparent Black finish is documented in F, FM and M nib sizes, subject to availability. Flush the piston with clean water before changing ink colours and avoid Pilot Tsuwairo pigment ink, which the manufacturer identifies as incompatible with this filling system.
The smoke-black barrel gives each ink a different visual character. Explore the Pilot Iroshizuku ink collection to compare how brighter, deeper and more muted colours appear through the translucent resin.
The package includes one Pilot Custom Heritage 92 Transparent Black Fountain Pen, its Pilot presentation case and the corresponding documentation. (Product photographs are for reference and slight variations may exist between the images and the original item).
Pilot created the Custom family in 1971 to accommodate different handwriting styles through carefully developed nibs, sizes and filling systems. Introduced in 2010, the Custom Heritage 92 brought an integrated piston to a demonstrator format. The Transparent Black edition presents that visible engineering through a more discreet smoked finish rather than a completely clear barrel.
The Pilot name itself comes from the maritime background of founders Ryosuke Namiki and Masao Wada. A marine pilot guides vessels safely through demanding waters, reflecting their ambition to help lead the Japanese writing instrument industry. The Heritage 92 carries that principle forward through engineering that is visible, understandable and designed for regular writing.
“The dark transparency does not conceal the ink; it gives every colour a different presence.”
