Over time, the interior elastic that holds the refills or the bookmark string may deteriorate, lose tension or stretch, making replacement necessary. At that point, you will also need to change the brass fastener, since the original part will be deformed or “crimped” after being hammered, so it cannot be reused.
Instructions for use
Materials needed: scissors and a household hammer.
How to set the brass fastener:
1. Pass the elastic and the bookmark string through the two holes on the spine of the leather cover and adjust them to the desired length.
2. Thread both through the brass fastener as shown in the included diagram.
3. Pull gently to remove any slack.
4. Tie a discreet knot between the end of the elastic and the bookmark string to prevent them from slipping. Try to keep this knot inside the brass fastener.
5. Wrap the brass fastener with a piece of paper or fabric to protect it, and gently tap it with a hammer to secure it.
6. Trim the excess elastic and string for a clean and tidy finish.
How to attach the exterior elastic:
Cut the elastic of your chosen color to the desired length, tie a knot, and pass the loop through the hole in the leather cover. This elastic can be used to close the leather notebook horizontally (the most common) or vertically, simply by adjusting the knot length as needed.
