Mikey first appeared in Number Book, a children’s counting book published in 2010 and created by Lisa Larson with her daughter Johanna, a graphic designer. Each number was accompanied by a different animal, and the striped cat appeared on the page for number one. His striking shape and expression immediately set him apart from the other characters.
The cat was selected for the book cover and gradually developed into a character in his own right. Mikey’s simple outline, long striped body and self-assured personality made him particularly popular in Japan. He has since appeared across ceramics, textiles, household objects and stationery, including this collaboration with mt.
The washi paper used by mt is thin, flexible and strong. Its balanced adhesive helps the tape stay in position while allowing careful removal from many smooth surfaces without leaving residue. Born in Sweden in 1931, Lisa Larson developed much of her career at the Gustavsberg porcelain factory, where she helped shape a celebrated period of Scandinavian ceramics. Her animal figures are known for their simple forms, gentle humour and ability to express a clear personality through a small number of carefully chosen details.
Larson later continued as an independent designer and opened her own ceramic studio in 1992. Her work attracted collectors around the world and found a particularly enthusiastic audience in Japan. In 2022, she received a medal from the Swedish government for her contribution to arts and crafts. She passed away in 2024, but characters such as Mikey continue her distinctive visual language.
mt is produced by Kamoi Kakoshi, a Japanese adhesive manufacturer whose history dates back to 1923. The stationery brand was introduced in 2008 after three masking tape enthusiasts presented the company with a handmade booklet demonstrating creative uses for industrial tape and requested a broader selection of colours. Their idea inspired the development of an initial twenty-colour range.
Since then, mt has transformed masking tape into an accessible tool for decorating, organising and experimenting with colour. Its artist collaborations bring distinctive illustrations to a practical everyday material. Mikey Pattern reflects this approach by combining Lisa Larson’s Scandinavian character design with mt’s Japanese experience in producing reliable washi paper tape.
